ABET Computer Centre

Dutch volunteers Jan and Rinus, have worked alongside I Care Coordinator Robert Van Zyl to complete refurbishment works to the Computer Centre at I Care Christian School, Amanzimtoti. The room looks fantastic and is well equipped for use thanks to the kind donation of 20 computers by Be More and an alarm system, benching, swivel chairs and donation of electrics by Mother of Peace.

Jan and Rinus have networked the computers to run ABET and EDUBUNTU software. EDUBUNTU is educational freeware that allows the teaching of many subjects in an interactive environment. The boys at I Care Christian School are excited to use the Computer Centre, start learning some basic IT skills and use EDUBUNTU as part of their curriculum.

Although the centre is near completion we need to purchase a Pentium 4 PC to run as a server. As the specifications are quite stringent this will cost about R8, 000. We are also keen to install air-conditioning units and internet for the centre. For more information on how to support us in this way, e-mail Ken Cross at Ken@icare.co.za.

Thanks to the generous grant of R100,000 by FIETA (Furniture Industries Education and Training Authority) and their sponsorship of 24 ABET positions for I Care through MediaWorks, I Care have employed Renske Fitzjohn as part-time coordinator of basic literacy and computer training courses for I Care House Parents, Mother of Peace Care Workers and other I Care initiatives. We look forward to sharing more about how the courses are going in our next newsletter.
